SSB Block with Symbols and Resource Blocks in the 5G NR grid
The Synchronization Signal (SS) Block (or SSB) is the VERY FIRST signal/message that a cellular device decodes once it is powered ON or moves from the Airplane to normal mode.
5G NR is (to date) actually the epitome of the research in telco standardization. It amazes me how a single feature in 5G NR can accomplish so many multiple tasks or activities. In this very short article, I will articulate The Many Things that UE can accomplish with the SSB block.
Primarily, the SSB is comprised of only three components as shown in Figure above.
Primary Synchronization Signals (PSS)
Secondary Synchronization Signals (SSS)
Physical Broadcast Channel (PBCH) information.
However, with the SS Block, a device is able to perform several of the following tasks, simultaneously.
Frequency and Timing Synchronization with the cell.
Obtaining the cell’s Physical ID (aka PCI).
Measure and report cell level RSRP and RSRQ levels.
Obtain parameters to decode System Information (SI), especially System Information Block-1 (SIB1).
Beam Sweeping.
